What Would Grandma Do? (Or, Free Really IS Better)

Surfing around the AppStore looking for cool free apps the other day (OK, I was “wasting” time), I stumbled on AppGratis, a free app that gives you, well—free apps. What could be better than free—X 2? I thought. And I also thought triumphantly to myself: this is exactly the kind of app I could be proud to download, and, if my beloved, uber-thrifty Grandma were still alive, show off to her as we sat down to a rousing game of Old Maid. I can just see her nodding her gray-haired head and smiling at the taglines, “Funny Little App, Great Deals” and “An Ugly App with Attractive Deals.”

Here is my grandma holding a rolling pin and nodding her approval:

A new approach to free app discovery? I am sure she would have been pleased. It wasted almost no time: it took precisely five seconds (noting the time because I wouldn’t want to be caught staring at my iPhone—a rude, anti-social behavior I know my German Lutheran grandmother would have politely frowned on) to download the free AppGratis app, read the intro blurbs (cute), browse my first free app, scan the previous deals and free apps, and start downloading my free app of the day. All this and time to wash my hands before dinner.

Here are the 1-2-3 opening screens (easy as Dutch Apple Pie):

And voila! Here is today’s free app:

Sound too good to be true? Let me know. I’m looking for a free app that gives you free apps that search for free apps. Just as soon as I clean my room.

NOTE: Just so you know: AppGratis is not actually run by a cute little appfinder icon named Sam–only. It is actually a sophisticated, 40-person company with operations in dozens of markets and recent backing by Iris Capital and the Orange Publicis Fund (see their blog for more info and lots of talk about mobile DNA, global reach and things like that). Somehow, I think Grandma would have liked that my new boyfriend–Sam, that is–is actually a big thinker with big plans.
